Birsel Karakoç is Professor in Turkic Languages at Uppsala University's Department of Linguistics and Philology. Her research focuses on comparative Turkic linguistics, syntax, morphology, and language documentation, with particular expertise in endangered Turkic languages and bilingual contexts.
Her research interests include:
- Syntax and morphology of Turkic languages (especially Nogay, Kazakh, and Azerbaijani)
- Clause chaining and subordination mechanisms
- Language contact and bilingualism in Turkish heritage communities
- Documentation of endangered Turkic languages
- Historical development of Turkic languages in Central Asia and the Caucasus
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent focus on morphosyntactic structures across Turkic languages, with growing emphasis on language documentation and revitalization efforts for endangered varieties. Her work bridges theoretical linguistics with practical language preservation.
