Professor Birgitte Andersen holds the position of Professor of the Economics & Management of Innovation at Birkbeck Business School, University of London, and is the CEO and co-founder of Big Innovation Centre. Her academic career spans over two decades, with a PhD in Economics from the University of Reading (1997) and earlier degrees from the University of Aalborg and the University of Reading.
Her research focuses on intellectual property rights (IPRs), innovation management, technology policy, and digital transformation. She bridges academic theory with practical industry insights, advising governments, policymakers, and firms globally. Notably, she has contributed to UK, European, and international initiatives, including roles with the EU Commission, OECD, UN, and WIPO.
Big Innovation Centre, under her leadership, is a think tank recognized as 'Think-Tank of the Year' (2018–2019) and a leader in AI and blockchain policy. The Centre hosts UK parliamentary groups on AI and blockchain, influences regulatory trends, and collaborates globally, with offices in the Middle East and India.
Her publications span IP governance, digital economy impacts, and innovation strategies, reflecting her dual focus on academic rigor and real-world applications. She frequently engages with media (BBC, Forbes) and serves as an expert witness on IP law. Her work emphasizes the strategic value of intangible assets and the ethical dimensions of emerging technologies like AI.
