Birgit Schippers is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Strathclyde, affiliated with StrathCyber. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on human rights and artificial intelligence, particularly examining the societal impact of AI-driven technologies like facial recognition and biometric systems. She explores how AI affects protected groups, human rights, democracy, and the rule of law, while advocating for ethically grounded regulatory frameworks anchored in international human rights law. Her recent projects include studies on biometric technologies and political rights, online disinformation, and gender dimensions of AI regulation in Europe.
Dr. Schippers holds a PhD from Queen's University Belfast (2005) and has authored influential books such as Judith Butler (2014) and Critical Perspectives on Human Rights (2018). She serves as an External Examiner at Brunel University London and contributes to policy initiatives addressing digital human rights challenges. Notably, she was nominated for the Strathclyde Women+ in Leadership Network Award (2024).
Her teaching includes courses on Internet Law, Human Rights & Digital Technologies, and Regulating Technology at the postgraduate level. She actively engages in global collaborations through projects like the Global Digital Human Rights Network and has been awarded grants for interdisciplinary research, including a £132,000 CDT in Human Rights-based Decision-Making (2023–2027).
