Birgit HUEMER

Birgit HUEMER is an Assistant Professor in Linguistics and Director of the University of Luxembourg Language Centre. She holds joint roles in the Department of Humanities within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. Her academic journey includes teaching and research across Austria, Germany, Romania, Croatia, and Australia.

Education:

• PhD in Linguistics, University of Vienna (2010)
• Studies in German Literature, Linguistics, and Mathematics at University of Vienna
• Short research stay at University of Technology Sydney, Australia

Research Focus: Birgit’s work spans academic writing in multilingual contexts, text/discourse analysis of digital/social media genres, and multimodal theories applied to interactive media and art perception. She co-edits the Schreibwissenschaft book series and actively contributes to professional associations like GewissS (Austrian Association for Academic Writing) and LGV (Luxembourg Association of German Studies).

Awards & Recognition:

• 2024: IWCA Outstanding Book Award (co-editor)
• 2023: SFHEA Senior Fellow for teaching excellence
• 2013: University of Vienna Publication Fund

Teaching & Leadership: She teaches academic writing, applied linguistics, and multilingualism at all university levels. Her leadership includes directing the Language Centre and serving on academic boards. She has also secured grants for doctoral and postdoctoral research.
