Dr Bin-Zhi Qian is a Reader, Principal Investigator, Chancellor’s Fellow, and CRUK Career Development Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. He is affiliated with the Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre and the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health, focusing on tumor microenvironment mechanisms in cancer metastasis and therapy resistance.
- Biomedical Sciences PhD (Albert Einstein College of Medicine)
- Biochemistry BSc (Fudan University, Shanghai)
His research explores interactions between metastatic tumor cells and host cell types (e.g., myeloid cells, mesenchymal stem cells), aiming to develop novel therapies targeting host-derived factors and humanized models for breast/prostate cancer drug resistance. Key collaborations include institutions in New York (Memorial Sloan Kettering, Weill Cornell) and Edinburgh-based experts like Professors David Cameron and Margaret Frame.
Current projects are funded by Cancer Research UK (£1.5M, 2015–2021) and an ERC Starting Grant (€1.5M, 2017–2022). Awards include the Susan G. Komen Postdoctoral Fellowship and prestigious fellowships from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and others.
- Current PhD students: Ruoyu Ma, Nikki Graham
- Current Master’s student: Alex Williamson
- Alumni Master’s: Heyuan Li, Meghan Maslen
Technologies developed include in vivo metastasis models, intra-vital imaging, and bone marrow/organ assays. Future work emphasizes translating findings into clinical applications via collaborations with clinicians like Dr. Larry Hayward and Professor Jeffrey Pollard.
