Professor Billie Bonevski is a prominent health behaviour scientist currently serving as Professor at Flinders University, Adelaide, and Honorary Professor at the University of Newcastle's School of Medicine and Public Health. With over $30 million in research funding as Chief Investigator, including continuous NHMRC funding for the past decade, she has established herself as a leader in tobacco control research, particularly regarding disadvantaged populations.
Her fields of interest include tobacco control, smoking cessation, public health, health promotion, cancer control, and addressing health inequities. According to bibliometric platforms, she ranks #2 in Australia for smoking cessation publications and #1 globally for smoking cessation and homelessness research, placing her in the top 0.1% of PubMed authors worldwide on tobacco smoking cessation.
Professor Bonevski's research portfolio demonstrates a strong focus on translating evidence into practice, with her work influencing policies such as routine distress screening in oncology centers and the implementation of the Cancer Council's Tackling Tobacco Program across multiple Australian states. Her laboratory work focuses on implementing smoking cessation interventions across diverse settings including drug and alcohol treatment services, mental health facilities, and community social services, with particular attention to reaching socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Current projects include investigating vaporized nicotine products for smoking cessation among priority populations and embedding smoking cessation support within lung cancer screening programs.
