Bill Worden is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages & Classics at the University of Alabama's College of Arts and Sciences. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on Spanish literature of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries during fall and spring semesters, and introductory Spanish language classes in the summer. From 2019 to 2024, he served as the UA in Colombia Faculty Director for the six-week summer program at the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla.
Dr. Worden's research focuses primarily on early modern Spanish literature with special emphasis on Miguel de Cervantes and Don Quixote. His scholarly work examines literary techniques, character development, and intertextual connections within Cervantes' masterpiece. Complementing his literary scholarship, he has developed significant expertise in foreign language pedagogy, creating practical methods to help world language teachers be more effective in the classroom and assist students in acquiring Spanish more efficiently. His dual focus bridges academic literary analysis with practical classroom applications.
His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly engagement with Cervantes studies, with recent work exploring Cervantes's use of bad art as literary critique, transformations of knightly traditions, and pedagogical approaches to teaching Don Quixote. His most recent article (2022) examines Cervantes's critique of bad literature through representations of bad art in Don Quixote. His pedagogical publications offer practical classroom strategies for maintaining target language use across educational levels.
Outside traditional university teaching, Dr. Worden serves as the Spanish professor for The Great Courses series, where he has developed two comprehensive video courses representing a full year of college-level Spanish instruction for adult learners. His unique combination of expertise in both literary scholarship and language pedagogy positions him as a valuable contributor to academic research and practical language education.
