Bill Anderson serves as an Associate Teaching Professor in the Mechanical Engineering program within the University of Washington's School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. Drawing from a distinguished 20-year career in the US Navy and subsequent technology leadership roles at companies including AT&T Wireless and Cingular Wireless, he specializes in maritime engineering systems, nuclear propulsion, and deployable security infrastructure with a strong emphasis on practical engineering education.
His academic credentials include a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington and an MBA from the University of Phoenix, complemented by specialized naval training as a Surface Warfare Officer and Nuclear Propulsion Plant Operator. This unique blend of military, industry, and academic experience informs his teaching methodology.
Professor Anderson's instructional focus centers on applied mechanical engineering disciplines through hands-on laboratory courses including Thermodynamics, Materials Engineering Lab, and Thermal Fluids Lab. His expertise in maritime security systems and 3D modeling/analysis directly translates to real-world engineering problem-solving in courses like Mechanical Design II and Machining Fundamentals, preparing students for industry challenges through capstone projects and FE Exam preparation.
He actively mentors undergraduate researchers through independent study projects, leveraging extensive industry connections within the maritime engineering sector. His laboratory instruction emphasizes practical skill development in machining, thermal-fluid systems, and design validation, creating a bridge between theoretical concepts and operational engineering requirements.
