Bilisuma Dito

Bilisuma Dito is an Associate Professor of Globalization and Development Studies at Maastricht University. He serves as Project Manager for the Well-being, Women, and Work (3WE) Research Project and is affiliated with the Transnational Migration Research Group (TMG) and the Globalization, Transnationalism, and Development (GTD) Research Group. His research focuses on African migration contexts, gender dynamics, and well-being in familial and normative frameworks.

He teaches and supervises in Maastricht University's Globalization and Development Studies (GDS) Master’s program, including courses like 'Research Methods in GDS' and has coordinated the Minor in Globalization and Development. His interdisciplinary work bridges academic research with policy engagement through co-creation with practitioners.

Key research interests include transnational families, migrant well-being, gender norms in migration, and mixed-methods research. He has published extensively on topics such as child labor in Ethiopia, family reunification aspirations among Ghanaian youth, and psychological well-being of female workers in African labor sectors.

Prof. Dito has co-supervised PhD theses on transnational parenting, migrant caregiving, and child-raising arrangements. He is a Research Associate at Leiden University’s African Studies Center and holds professional memberships in the Ethiopian Economics Association and Association of Feminist Economics.

His work emphasizes socio-economic inequities, mental health disparities among migrant workers, and policy-relevant research. Current projects examine low-skilled female labor in Ethiopia and gendered dimensions of African transnational couples' reunification in the Netherlands.
