Bilge Erten is an Associate Professor of Economics and International Affairs at Northeastern University, and a Faculty Scholar at the Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research. She holds a visiting Associate Professor position at Boston University's Institute for Economic Development (IED) (2021–2022). She earned her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2010.
Her research focuses on Development Economics, emphasizing Gender, Health, and Education. Key areas include domestic violence, mental health disparities, and the socioeconomic impacts of global events like the pandemic. Recent projects analyze lockdown effects on mental health and domestic violence, using natural experiments such as age-specific curfews in Turkey.
Erten serves as an Associate Editor at Feminist Economics and a Research Fellow at IZA. Her work has been featured in outlets like the Financial Times, Bloomberg View, and NPR Marketplace. She has received awards including the World Bank Economic Review’s Excellence in Refereeing Award (2017–2019) and grants supporting research on democracy and women’s empowerment.
Her academic journey includes postdoctoral fellowships at Columbia University and the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET). She collaborates widely, with ongoing projects exploring child health disparities and the gendered effects of globalization.
