Bichuan Li is a Lecturer in Music and Keyboard Coordinator at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa since 1986. A renowned pianist, she overcame early career challenges, including rejections from conservatories due to political and physical barriers, to become an acclaimed performer and educator. She holds an MM in Piano Performance from UH Mānoa and a BA from Shanghai Normal University’s Music College. Beyond UH, she served as Honorary Associate Professor at Shanghai Teachers’ University (1991–present) and Visiting Professor at its Music College (2012).
Her research focuses on classical repertoire, modern Chinese compositions, and works by women composers. She has performed globally, including in Asia, Europe, and South America, with notable reviews from Jiefang Daily and Swedish media praising her 'refined technique' and 'flawless' performances. Her 1998 CD In Clara Wieck Schumann’s Circle showcases her interpretive depth.
Ms. Li is a certified Music Teachers’ National Association instructor, former President of the Honolulu and Hawaii Music Teachers’ Associations, and advocate for music education. Her students excel in competitions, and she maintains a prominent private studio. Awards include recognition as a member of the全美荣誉会 (National Honor Society equivalent) and contributions to music pedagogy.
