Dr. Bich-Ngoc Turner is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington. She specializes in Vietnamese language pedagogy, postwar Vietnam studies, and US-Vietnam relations. Her work focuses on curriculum development, proficiency assessment, and instructional materials for Vietnamese language education. She holds a PhD in American Studies from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, with a focus on US-Vietnam relations and postwar literature.
- Education: PhD in American Studies (University of Hawai'i at Mānoa), M.A. in American Studies, Graduate Certificate in International Cultural Studies, B.A. in British Literature and Lexicology (Hanoi University).
Her research emphasizes Vietnamese lexicology, contemporary literature, and postwar cultural studies. She has led projects developing standardized oral proficiency guidelines and advanced reading materials for Vietnamese language instruction. Notably, she collaborated with colleagues to create content-based materials for elementary and intermediate Vietnamese levels and co-authored a testing package for reading proficiency assessment. She is an ACTFL-certified OPI tester for Vietnamese since 2018.
Dr. Turner has received continuous funding from the Henry Luce Foundation from 2016 to 2023. Her contributions include advancing Vietnamese studies programs at UW and prior roles as a lecturer at Yale University and instructor at the U.S. Department of State.
