Bhumi Purohit is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. Previously, she held a postdoctoral research associate position at Princeton School of Public and International Affairs with a joint appointment in the Department of Psychology. She earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.Sc. in Contemporary India Studies from the University of Oxford, and a B.A. in Public Policy from Duke University.

Her research examines gender politics, institutional norms, and public service delivery in South Asia, with a focus on India. She investigates how gender biases in bureaucracies create barriers for women politicians and impact policy implementation, as well as systemic challenges in public financial management and state capacity.

She has received funding from the Institute of International Studies (UC Berkeley), the Weiss Family Fund, the Center for Politics of Development, and the Center on Contemporary India (UC Berkeley). Her work employs multi-method approaches, including surveys, experiments, and qualitative fieldwork.
