Poulami Roychowdhury is an Associate Professor of Sociology and International and Public Affairs at Brown University’s Watson Institute, with a joint appointment in the Department of Sociology. She is also a member of the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies. Her research focuses on the intersection of politics and law, particularly regarding gender-based violence in India and the United States. Roychowdhury’s work examines how grassroots movements influence legal enforcement and access to justice, with a focus on marginalized communities.
Her research has been supported by prestigious grants including the National Science Foundation, Fulbright Foundation, and multiple Canadian research councils. Notable publications include her award-winning book *Capable Women, Incapable States: Negotiating Violence and Rights in India* (Oxford, 2021), which explores how women navigate legal systems in resource-constrained environments. She also serves on editorial boards for journals like *American Journal of Sociology* and *Gender & Society*.
Roychowdhury’s current projects include studying the fetal personhood movement in the U.S. and analyzing pandemic impacts on citizenship in India. Her work has garnered numerous awards, including the ASA Human Rights Section’s Gordon Hirabayashi Book Award and multiple article prizes. She frequently speaks at international conferences, including upcoming talks at the University of Trento and UC Berkeley.
