Beverly McIver is a renowned African American painter and Professor of the Practice of Art, Art History & Visual Studies at Duke University since 2014. Her work explores themes of racial, gender, social, and occupational identities, often through self-portraits and depictions of her sister Renee, who has developmental disabilities.

Research Interests: McIver’s art critically examines stereotypes, self-acceptance, family dynamics, illness, death, and freedom of expression. Her works, such as the Full Circle survey exhibition, analyze the intersection of personal narratives with broader societal challenges, including mental disability and racial identity. Recent projects like the mural VOTE! (2024) highlight civic engagement through art.
