Bettina Walter

Prof. Bettina Walter has served as Professor of Costume Design in the Art Department at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart since 2010, concurrently holding roles as Senate member and Chair of the Art Study Commission. She maintains an active parallel career as a freelance costume designer for international theatres and opera houses.

Her educational foundation includes:

• Diploma in stage costume design at HDK Berlin (1992)
• Stage costume design studies under Professor Rupprecht at HDK Berlin (1981–1987)
• Sculpture studies under Professor Türk at Nürtingen Free Art School (1979–1981)

Walter's research integrates artistic conceptualization with practical application across theatre, opera, and film contexts. Her methodology emphasizes historical and contemporary costume analysis, material science experimentation, and cultural fashion history through structured studio work. Interdisciplinary collaboration with textile design, restoration, and photography departments forms a core component of her pedagogical approach.

She supervises students through a comprehensive six-semester curriculum involving graphic concept development, workshop implementation, and collaborative projects. Key partnerships include the Stuttgart State Theater for practical seminars and Ludwigsburg Film Academy for film productions, culminating in a stage/costume design diploma.

The newly established costume workshop (April 2022) serves as an interdisciplinary hub for seminars on historical pattern-making and material science, featuring an open workshop for all academy students. Experimental projects extend to Heusteig Theater's stage and ADK Ludwigsburg collaborations with directing and acting programs.
