Betsy Huang is a Professor of English at Clark University, holding the Andrea B. and Peter D. Klein ’64 Distinguished Professorship (2018–2023). She served as Associate Provost and Dean of the College (2019–2024) and previously as Clark’s inaugural Chief Officer of Diversity and Inclusion (2013–2016). Her research focuses on Asian American literature, science fiction, and genre theory, with a particular emphasis on marginalized narratives. Huang teaches courses like Science Fiction and the Mind of the Other and Race, Genre, and Autobiography, blending interdisciplinary approaches.
Education: Ph.D. and M.A. in English from the University of Rochester (2004, 1999), M.A. from Kent State University (1996), and B.A. in English from SUNY Buffalo (1989).
Research Interests: Huang’s work examines intersections of ethnicity, genre, and futurism. She explores how speculative fiction challenges cultural invisibility and reimagines identity. Key themes include techno-orientalism, immigrant narratives, and the 'new weird' literary movement. Her writing spans monographs, edited volumes, and scholarly articles, with a focus on Asian American literature’s evolving landscape.
Awards: Two-time recipient of Clark’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. Her edited collections include Asian American Literature in Transition (2021) and Techno-Orientalism (2015/2025).
Grants & Leadership: Directed Clark’s Center for Gender, Race, and Area Studies (2017–2019). Current affiliations include the Higgins School of Humanities and the Critical AI Community Data Lab.
Labs/Teams: Co-founded CTRL+ALT: A Culture Lab on Imagined Futures, exploring speculative narratives and social justice. Collaborates across disciplines, including philosophy and sociology, in teaching and research.
