Betsey King, Ph.D., LCAT, MT-BC, serves as Associate Professor of Music Therapy at Nazareth College. With 16 years of full-time clinical experience prior to her academic appointment, she has provided therapeutic interventions for over 500 clients across diverse clinical populations including stroke survivors, children with autism, and young women with eating disorders.
Her research focuses on neurorehabilitation through musical adaptation, where precise melodic modifications facilitate speech recovery in stroke patients, strategic pauses in piano improvisation sustain focus in autism therapy, and harmonic alterations in songwriting encourage emotional disclosure in eating disorder treatment. She emphasizes clinically-driven creativity where micro-adjustments in musical elements yield macro-therapeutic outcomes, bridging artistic expression with measurable neurological and psychological improvements.
Dr. King's educational philosophy centers on cultivating therapist-researchers who integrate evidence-based practice with innovative clinical improvisation. She prepares students to become board-certified music therapists capable of designing personalized interventions that maximize client communication and emotional expression through music's transformative potential.
