Alan Turry is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. As the Faculty Liaison to the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy, he specializes in music therapy research and clinical practice. He holds a DA, LCAT, and MT-BC certifications, with all degrees earned at NYU. His work focuses on developing innovative approaches such as the Music Engagement Scale and integrating music therapy with occupational therapy for stroke rehabilitation. He has received the Arthur Flagler Fultz Research Award (2012) for collaborative work with NYU Medical Center’s Rusk Rehabilitation Institute.
Dr. Turry’s research emphasizes improvisation’s role in clinical practice, particularly for autism spectrum disorders and aphasia. He has published extensively on Nordoff-Robbins music therapy methodologies and serves on editorial boards for major music therapy journals. His teaching includes graduate courses in NYU’s music therapy program and international lectures, including a visiting role at London’s Nordoff-Robbins Centre.
