Bethany Moreton is a Professor of History at Dartmouth College and a leading scholar in the history of U.S. capitalism, religion, and political economy. She holds affiliations with the Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studies at the New School and co-edits Columbia University Press's Studies in the History of U.S. Capitalism. Her work examines intersections of religion, economics, and conservative movements, with a focus on neoliberalism, corporate Christianity, and transnational political theology.
Education: PhD in History (Yale University, 2006); B.A. in History (Williams College). Research interests include the cultural and ideological dimensions of capitalism, the history of conservatism, and the relationship between religion and economic systems. She has been recognized with major awards for her groundbreaking book To Serve God and Wal-Mart, which explores the fusion of evangelical Christianity and corporate free-enterprise models.
Moreton is a co-founder of Freedom University Georgia, providing free college education to undocumented students, and a founding member of the Tepoztlan Institute for the Transnational History of the Americas. Her current projects include Slouching Towards Moscow (Harvard UP) on American evangelicals' engagement with Russia and Perverse Incentives (Zone Books) on economics as a cultural battleground.
