Bethan Harries is a Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University, affiliated with the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology and specializing in the Department of Sociology. Her research explores intersections of youth, urban citizenship, race, and nationalism, with a focus on how austerity and devolution shape social inclusion/exclusion.
Her recent work, "Disturbing Hierarchies: Sexual Harassment and the Politics of Intimacy in Fieldwork" (2022), analyzes how sexual harassment in fieldwork is mediated through constructed "complicities" and hierarchical power structures. The paper critiques normative expectations of rapport in qualitative research and highlights risks inherent in participatory methods.
Bethan previously worked at the University of Manchester, as an immigration lawyer in Bradford, and as an international election observer. Her research emphasizes critical re-evaluations of qualitative methodologies, particularly in contexts of inequality and shifting nationalist narratives in Wales and Scotland.
