Dr. Shruti Chaudhry serves as a Chancellor's Fellow in Sociology at the University of Edinburgh and co-director of the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships (CRFR). Her work bridges sociological inquiry with ethnographic fieldwork across South Asian communities in India and Scotland, focusing on structural inequalities and intimate social dynamics.
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Edinburgh
- M.Phil. in Sociology from the University of Delhi
- M.A. in Sociology from the University of Delhi
- B.A. in Sociology from the University of Delhi
Chaudhry's research critically examines gender inequalities, migration, and family structures through ethnographic lenses. She investigates how caste, race, and aging intersect with care practices and intimate relationships in both rural Indian contexts and Scottish diaspora communities. Her methodology emphasizes qualitative depth to uncover lived experiences of marginalization.
Recent publications reveal a trajectory from Indian marriage migration studies toward diaspora aging research, with consistent focus on South Asian communities. Her work connects intimate relationship dynamics to broader structural forces like pandemic health policies and caste hierarchies.
Her scholarly recognition includes:
- Shortlisted for the British Association for South Asian Studies (BASAS) Book Prize 2023 for Moving for Marriage: Inequalities, Intimacy and Women's Lives in Rural North India
Chaudhry currently supervises PhD candidate Nuria Lopez Vazquez. Her research has received significant funding including a British Academy postdoctoral fellowship (2019-2023) examining South Asian older adults in Scotland, and collaboration with the Edinburgh University Advanced Care Research Centre on minority ethnic care transitions.
As CRFR co-director, she leads interdisciplinary teams exploring family life across global contexts, while her ACRC work integrates care studies with ethnic minority aging research in Edinburgh's diverse communities.
