Richard Harris is a Professor in the Department of Social Work at the University of Texas at San Antonio's College for Health, Community and Policy. His work focuses on social demography, demographic techniques, and issues related to aging, gender roles, sexual harassment/assault, military sociology, cultural competence, and stratification.

Harris has contributed to understanding digital inequality through studies on broadband access in San Antonio, formal kinship care for Black families in Texas, and the impact of economic downturns on vulnerable populations. Recent publications show a focus on intra-city digital divides, racial disparities in kinship care, and intersectional approaches to bystander intervention. He has secured three grants totaling $234,600, including a 2023 Digital Inclusion Survey ($45,000) and a 2020 Domestic Violence Survey ($150,000).
He has presented at multiple conferences including the American Public Health Association Annual Conference (2022), Cultural Inclusion Institute Conference (2022), and Southwest Social Sciences Association Annual Conference (2022).
