Dr Beth Spacey is a Lecturer in Medieval History at the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, University of Queensland, specializing in medieval religious cultures with a primary focus on the crusades and broader interests spanning the European and Mediterranean Middle Ages. Her academic profile integrates historical rigor with cultural analysis to examine religious conflict and societal structures.
Her educational trajectory includes a PhD in Medieval History from the University of Birmingham (2017), preceded by teaching fellowships at the same institution (2016-2017) and Trinity College Dublin (2017). This foundation was supported by an Arts and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Fellowship (2012-2015).
Spacey's research interrogates medieval Latin Crusade narratives through interdisciplinary lenses, emphasizing miracles, masculinities, landscapes, gender, the supernatural, environmental consciousness, and colonial dynamics. Her work reveals how medieval authors constructed theological and political meaning through narrative devices, particularly in depicting conquest and cross-cultural encounters. She bridges textual analysis with material culture studies to explore how environmental perceptions shaped crusading ideology.
Her publication trends demonstrate sustained engagement with crusade historiography, evolving from miracle studies in early works to environmental frameworks in recent research. Key thematic threads include the sacralization of landscapes, gendered representations of violence, and the interplay between biblical exegesis and military conquest. Her 2020 monograph established foundational arguments about miraculous tropes, which subsequent articles have expanded into environmental humanities and postcolonial readings of crusade texts.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Arts and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Fellowship (2012-2015)
- Teaching Fellowship at the University of Birmingham (2016-2017)
- Teaching Fellowship at Trinity College Dublin (2017)
- Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Queensland (2018)
Spacey has secured substantial research funding throughout her career, beginning with her AHRC doctoral award and continuing through her UQ postdoctoral fellowship supporting her current environmental research. Her scholarly impact extends through book reviews engaging contemporary debates in crusade studies and gender history, demonstrating active participation in shaping the field's methodological directions.
