Beth Simone Noveck is a Professor at Northeastern University, holding appointments across multiple schools including the School of Law, College of Arts, Media and Design, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. She directs the Burnes Center for Social Change and co-leads The Governance Lab (The GovLab), focusing on institutional innovation and the impact of technology on public institutions. Her work emphasizes leveraging AI and data to enhance democratic processes, public problem-solving, and equitable governance.
Education: JD from Yale Law School (1997) and PhD in Political Science from Universität Innsbruck (1994). She has served as Chief AI Strategist for the State of New Jersey and previously advised governments on open governance initiatives, including the White House Open Government Initiative under President Obama.
Research Interests: Solving public problems through AI, participatory democracy, civic technology, and equitable public sector innovation. Her projects include platforms like Unchat, Peer-to-Patent, and Democracy Island, and she co-founded initiatives like InnovateUS and AI for Impact.
Awards and Honors: Doctorat Honoris Causa from the University of Geneva, Stanford Social Innovation Review Best Book (2021), and recognition as a Foreign Policy 100 and Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business.
Grants and Advising: Leadership in NJ’s Office of Innovation, AI Taskforce, and Future of Work Task Force. Her work bridges academia, government, and civil society to advance technology-driven solutions for public challenges.
