Bertine Bargeman is a Program Director, Senior Researcher, and Lecturer at Breda University of Applied Sciences' Academy for Leisure & Events. She holds a PhD in Leisure Studies from Tilburg University (2001) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship on sustainable tourist mobility at Telos (2006–2009). Her work focuses on tourist behavior, practice theories in leisure, and sustainable tourism impacts. She teaches courses on tourist choice behavior and advises students across BSc, MSc, and PhD levels.
Research interests include storytelling in tourism experiences, sustainable tourism mobilities, and volunteering dynamics. She co-leads the Experiences & Storytelling knowledge group and collaborates internationally. Notable projects include the Van Gogh Storysperience initiative and studies on volunteering in conscious destinations. She has contributed to media discussions on leisure and tourism topics.
Her editorial roles include serving on the Annals of Tourism Research board since 2014. Key activities include guest lectures on storytelling applications and consultancy for tourism interventions like the Hanzesteden project.
