Judge Bernice B. Donald serves on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. She holds a J.D. from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law and an LL.M. in Judicial Studies from Duke University School of Law. She also received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Suffolk University. Donald is a Senior Lecturing Fellow and adjunct faculty member, contributing to legal education through roles at the National Judicial College and Federal Judicial Center (FJC).
Her professional engagements include service on the FJC Board of Directors (2003–2007), the Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules (1996–2002), and the Judicial Branch Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States since 2011. She chairs the ABA Center for Human Rights and leads multiple committees addressing diversity, implicit bias, and criminal justice within the American Bar Association (ABA) and National Bar Association.
Donald has held leadership roles in legal organizations, including ABA Criminal Justice Section Chair (2015–2016), ABA House of Delegates Litigation Section Delegate, and as the first African American President of the American Bar Foundation. Her work emphasizes judicial ethics, systemic reform, and advancing equity in legal practice.
