Assoz. Prof. Bernhard Salcher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environment and Biodiversity at the University of Salzburg. His academic career includes postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich and the University of Vienna. His research focuses on glacial and fluvial depositional systems, Quaternary climate, and Alpine geology. He has published extensively on topics such as glacial erosion, landscape evolution, and sediment dynamics.
Salcher's work integrates field studies, geochronology, and numerical modeling to address questions in Quaternary science and tectonics. He has led projects on subglacial landforms, overdeepenings, and the impact of glacial cycles on mountain topography. His recent studies include analyses of the Salzach Glacier's sediment dynamics and the role of the Bohemian Spur in Alpine exhumation patterns.
- Education:
- PhD in Geology (2008), University of Vienna
- Postdoc, ETH Zurich (2009–2012)
His research interests span glacial geomorphology, sedimentology, and the interplay between climate, tectonics, and topography. He has also contributed to interdisciplinary studies on mental health interventions and ecological impacts of landscape homogenization.
Salcher is actively involved in academic service, including editorial roles and field trip organization for the Quaternary Science community. His work bridges traditional geology with modern analytical techniques, such as cosmogenic nuclide dating and LiDAR-based terrain analysis.
