Professor Bernhard Löffler holds the Chair of Bavarian Regional History at the University of Regensburg's Faculty of Philosophy, Arts, History and Social Sciences since April 1, 2011. He previously served as Dean of the Faculty (2015-2017), Vice Dean (2013-2015), and has been a member of the University Senate (2017-2021) and University Council (2019-2021). Since January 2021, he has co-directed the Center for Remembrance Culture at the University of Regensburg with Prof. Dr. Jörg Skriebeleit.
His research spans comparative political history, constitutional development, and institutional history from the 18th to 20th centuries, with particular focus on Bavarian regional history, European currency cultures, social market economy, and neoliberalism. His scholarly approach combines political, economic, and cultural history with methodological innovation in historical research.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent scholarly trajectory examining Bavarian political structures, historical memory practices, and economic developments. His work demonstrates increasing interdisciplinary engagement, connecting traditional historical methods with cultural studies, memory studies, and spatial analysis. A notable trend is his exploration of how historical narratives shape contemporary political identities and institutional practices.

Professor Löffler has supervised numerous academic projects and publications, including significant editorial work on Bavarian history. His current research includes a structural analysis of Bavarian history in the 19th and 20th centuries and participation in the Independent Historical Commission examining the history of the Federal Ministry of Economics and its predecessor institutions. His academic leadership extends to directing the Center for Remembrance Culture, which bridges historical research with public engagement on memory practices.
As Director of the Center for Remembrance Culture, Professor Löffler leads interdisciplinary initiatives exploring historical consciousness and memorial practices. His collaborative projects with the Historisches Kolleg and other academic institutions demonstrate his commitment to fostering scholarly exchange and advancing methodological approaches to historical research.
