Bernhard Huss

Prof. Dr. Bernhard Huss is a full professor (W3-Professur) of Romance Philology at Freie Universität Berlin, where he has held his position since September 2012. He directs the Italian Center (Italienzentrum) and serves as Principal Investigator in the Excellence Cluster 'Temporal Communities'. His academic journey includes classical and Italian philology studies in Munich and Genoa, research stays at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1996-1998), a PhD in Classical Philology from LMU Munich (1998), and habilitation in Romance Philology from LMU Munich (2005).

Huss's research focuses on Renaissance and Early Modern literature with specialties in Italian and French traditions. Key interests include: Petrarchism and its European reception; epic poetry modeling ideological conflicts; Dante-Petrarch-Boccaccio traditions; Renaissance poetics; and the interplay between literature and visual culture. His work consistently explores how texts create cultural communities across temporal boundaries.

His publications demonstrate sustained engagement with Italian Renaissance authors, particularly through critical editions, poetic analyses, and studies of literary reception. Recent work focuses on Petrarchan manuscripts, allegorical representations in illustrated texts, and epistemological shifts in early modern narrative forms. Common themes include textual authority, historical consciousness, and interdisciplinary approaches to literary artifacts.
