Prof. Dr. Bernhard Hommel is a renowned psychologist and cognitive scientist affiliated with Leiden University (Cognitive Psychology Unit & Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition) and Shandong Normal University (Faculty of Psychology, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Brain Science and Mental Health). His research focuses on cognitive control, metacontrol, and the neural and computational mechanisms underlying human attention, action selection, and perception-action integration.
- Education: MA and PhD in Psychology (University of Bielefeld, 1990); Habilitation at Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich (1997).
His theoretical contributions include the event-file theory, which explores how perception-action episodes are bound and updated, and the metacontrol framework, addressing how cognitive resources are flexibly allocated. His work has significant applications in understanding ADHD, addiction, and intentional behavior. He has co-founded the Leiden Institute for Brain & Cognition (LIBC) and is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences. With over 500 publications and 45,000 citations, he remains actively engaged in advancing cognitive science and mentoring students globally.
Scientific Awards:
- Member of the German National Academy of Sciences
- Secretary of the International Association for Attention and Performance
Prof. Hommel has published extensively on topics such as stimulus-response bindings, dopamine’s role in cognition, and the neural basis of cognitive flexibility. His research spans theoretical and applied domains, integrating cognitive modeling, neuroimaging, and behavioral experimentation.
He currently serves as Professor at Shandong Normal University, where he continues his work on metacontrol and cognitive architecture, while maintaining ties to Leiden University and the Max Planck Institute.
