Laura Steenbergen is an Assistant Professor at Leiden University's Social and Behavioural Sciences faculty, affiliated with the Psychology department. Her research focuses on the microbiota-gut-brain axis, cognitive and affective processing, and the role of the vagal nerve in emotional experiences. She holds a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from Leiden University (2016) and has conducted postdoctoral work at Ohio State University and Oxford's Centre for Emotion and Affective Neuroscience.
Education: PhD in Cognitive Psychology (Leiden, 2016); Bachelor's/Master's in Psychology (Leiden).
Research Interests:
- Microbiota-gut-brain interactions and mental health
- Impact of probiotics/antibiotics on cognition
- Vagus nerve's role in emotion regulation
- Open science practices and interdisciplinary collaboration
Awards: NWO Veni Grant (2019), Young Scientist Award (ESCAN), Amsterdam Brain and Cognition Talent Grant.
Teaching: BSc/MSc Psychology programs, Clinical Psychology (MSc), and post-master clinical training (RINO).
