Bernard Schlager serves as Associate Professor of Historical and Cultural Studies at Pacific School of Religion (PSR) and has been a consortial faculty member at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) since 2000. He concurrently holds leadership positions as Executive Director of the Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion and Director of the Certificate of Sexuality and Religion program at PSR.
Education:
- PhD, Yale University (1996)
Research Focus: Schlager’s scholarship critically examines intersections of religion, gender, and sexuality across historical periods. His work spans medieval religious history (including inquisition records and Franciscan female founders), contemporary LGBTQ+ Christian movements, and pastoral care frameworks. He pioneers methodologies connecting historical analysis to modern religious inclusivity practices, particularly in documenting how marginalized communities navigate faith traditions.
Publication Trends: His research demonstrates consistent thematic evolution from medieval textual analysis (1998-2004) toward applied LGBTQ+ religious studies (2005-2007). Key trajectories include reconstructing premodern queer narratives, analyzing Boswell’s historiographical impact on American Christianity, and developing practical pastoral resources. This body of work establishes foundational bridges between historical scholarship and contemporary religious leadership training.
Institutional Leadership: As Executive Director of PSR’s Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion, Schlager cultivates interdisciplinary dialogue through conferences, publications, and community partnerships. His Certificate of Sexuality and Religion program trains clergy in evidence-based inclusive practices, directly translating academic research into ecclesiastical application.
