Bernard M. Levinson holds the Berman Family Chair of Jewish Studies and Hebrew Bible Professorship in the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota. A leading authority in Hebrew Bible scholarship, his work bridges ancient textual analysis and critical historical examination of academia during the Third Reich, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals through ethical scholarship.
Levinson's research centers on Deuteronomy, Pentateuchal formation, and biblical law in ancient Israel, with pioneering work on canon development and textual revision. His recent scholarship critically investigates how biblical studies was weaponized under National Socialism, exposing institutional complicity at universities like Tübingen and Salzburg through co-edited volumes that document scholars' roles in antisemitic ideology and resistance efforts.
His 2022-2025 publications reveal dual scholarly trajectories: continued foundational work on Deuteronomy and Pentateuchal kingship alongside urgent analyses of Nazi-era academia, including case studies on Norwegian occupation and German Assyriology's entanglement with fascist ideology.
Major honors include:
- Elected Member, American Academy for Jewish Research
- Fellow, Institute for Advanced Studies (Jerusalem)
- Fellow, Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton)
- Fellow, National Humanities Center
- Fellow, Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin
Levinson has directed significant projects including “Imagining Sinai: Revelation and Textuality in Ancient Israel” (2021-2022), “Convergence and Divergence in Pentateuchal Theory” (2012), and “Revelation and Redaction” (2010-2011). His scholarly leadership extends to invited presentations on biblical scholarship's Nazi entanglements and media engagement with contemporary antisemitism.
