Raymond F. Person, Jr. serves as Professor of Religion and Director of Interdisciplinary Studies at Ohio Northern University.
Person earned his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Semitic Studies from Duke University, establishing his scholarly foundation in biblical textual analysis.
His research centers on Biblical Studies with specialized expertise in Deuteronomy, the Pentateuch, and the Deuteronomistic History. Person challenges conventional biblical criticism through empirical approaches, examining how scribal practices influenced biblical composition and how environmental concerns appear in ancient religious texts. His work bridges historical criticism with literary analysis to provide fresh perspectives on biblical transmission.
Person has authored significant scholarly works including The Deuteronomic School (2002), The Deuteronomic History and the Book of Chronicles (2010), and Deuteronomy and Environmental Amnesia (2014). He has co-edited important volumes such as Deuteronomy in the Pentateuch, Hexateuch, and the Deuteronomistic History (2012) with Konrad Schmid and Empirical Models Challenging Biblical Criticism (2016) with Robert Rezetko.
Among his notable publications is the essay "YHWH's Word Is Not Contained in a Single Scroll," where he argues that Deuteronomy's references to "these words," "this torah," and "this scroll" represent the total revelation of YHWH to Israel rather than limited textual boundaries.
As Director of Interdisciplinary Studies, Person oversees academic programs that connect biblical scholarship with environmental studies, literary theory, and historical criticism, fostering cross-disciplinary approaches to religious texts.
