Bernard D. Cooperman is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Maryland, where he also holds the Louis L. Kaplan Professorship of Jewish History at the Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies. His office is located at 2130 Taliaferro Hall.
His research expertise spans Early Modern History, Jewish History, and Medieval History, with particular focus on Jewish communities in Europe, migration patterns, urbanization, and religious movements like Kabbalah and Sabbatianism. He has edited multiple volumes of essays, co-authored a book on the Ghetto of Venice, and authored eleven articles while consulting for museums and libraries on historical exhibits.
Professor Cooperman teaches diverse courses including 'History of the Jewish People', 'The City: Medieval to Modern', 'Jews in Early Modern Europe', and interdisciplinary seminars on historiography. He has directed the Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies (1991-1997) and developed courses integrating digital resources.
