Bernard Choi, Ph.D., is a Professor at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), holding dual appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering (Samueli School of Engineering) and the Department of Surgery (School of Medicine). His laboratory, the Microvascular Therapeutics & Imaging Laboratory (MTI Lab) at the Beckman Laser Institute, focuses on developing optical imaging technologies to study microvascular systems in health and disease. Key research areas include in vivo monitoring of microvascular responses to therapies, real-time blood flow imaging, and instrumentation development for clinical applications such as neurosurgery and dermatology.
Dr. Choi’s work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, training the next generation of biomedical engineers and clinicians. Recent projects include studying cerebral microhemorrhages in Alzheimer’s disease models, hypertension-induced vascular injury, and integrating EEG with hemodynamic imaging for cardiac arrest prognosis. His lab has developed novel devices like handheld blood-flow imagers and protocols for quantitative vascular analysis. Collaborations span preclinical models and clinical trials, with a focus on translational research.
Notable contributions include advancements in laser speckle contrast imaging, 3D vascular mapping, and optical clearing techniques. The MTI Lab actively engages undergraduate, graduate, and medical students in research, as evidenced by recent student awards and presentations. Dr. Choi’s team also publishes extensively in journals like Neurophotonics and Medical Imaging, focusing on both technical innovations and clinical applications.
His research is supported by grants from the NIH, NSF, and industry partnerships. The lab maintains strong ties with clinical departments at UCI, enabling rapid translation of imaging technologies into clinical practice. Future work includes expanding applications of real-time imaging for precision medicine and developing AI-driven analysis tools for large-scale vascular datasets.
