Bernard Black is the Nicholas J. Chabraja Professor at Northwestern University, holding positions in the Pritzker School of Law, the Kellogg School of Management, Department of Finance, and the Institute for Policy Research. His research focuses on health policy, medical malpractice, empirical causal inference, law and finance, and international corporate governance. He has authored over 150 articles and serves as a founding editor of the Journal of Law, Finance and Accounting.
Education includes a J.D. from Stanford Law School (1982), M.A. in Physics from UC Berkeley (1977), and A.B. in Physics from Princeton University (1975, magna cum laude). He previously held roles at the University of Texas and Columbia Law School.
Research interests emphasize healthcare policy, legal reforms, and methodological rigor in empirical studies. Recent work includes analyzing Medicaid expansion impacts, vaccine efficacy during the pandemic, and corporate governance dynamics.
