Bente Hannisdal is an Associate Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen. Her research focuses on sociolinguistics, language attitudes, and accent studies. She has supervised numerous master's theses examining sociolinguistic phenomena in media, including accent use in films and language attitudes in educational settings.
Her academic contributions include guiding research on global English varieties, phonological variation in regional accents (e.g., Cardiff English, Sheffield English), and Norwegian perceptions of non-native English. Notable supervised studies include analyses of accent portrayal in franchises like The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Disney films, as well as sociolinguistic investigations into Irish and Australian cinematic accents.
Ms. Hannisdal’s work emphasizes the intersection of language, power dynamics, and cultural representation. She has advised over 14 master’s students since 2013, covering topics from sociolinguistic change in regional dialects to comparative studies of British and American English non-standard features.
