Benoît Navarret is a Lecturer in Music and Musicology at Sorbonne University's Faculty of Arts since 2015, with additional teaching responsibilities in the Faculty of Science and Engineering since 2019. He also teaches at Paris 8 University since 2018. Navarret serves as Deputy Director of the UFR (Unité de Formation et de Recherche) of Music and Musicology at Sorbonne University (2020-2023) and is Co-responsible for the dual Bachelor's degree course in Sciences and Musicology. His academic career spans musical acoustics, organology, and music technology, with a particular focus on electric guitars and vibrotactile applications in music therapy.
Navarret completed his PhD in Aesthetics, Science and Technology of Arts at University Paris 8 (2008-2013), a DFS in Musical Acoustics at CNSMDP (2003-2006), a DEA in Performing Arts at University of Paris 8 (2003), and a Master of Music at University of Pau and Pays de l'Adour (2001-2002). His educational background uniquely combines musicology with economics and management (Bachelor's degree, 2000).
His research interests center on musical acoustics, organology (particularly electric guitars), music technology, sound recording, and innovative applications of vibrotactile therapy for eating disorders. Navarret's work bridges technical musical knowledge with clinical applications, exploring how sound and vibration can mediate bodily sensations in therapeutic contexts, particularly for anorexia nervosa patients. His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the intersection of instrument design, musical practice, and sensory perception.
Analysis of Navarret's recent publications (2019-2024) reveals three major research streams: 1) Historical and organological studies of electric guitars (particularly Fender and Gibson models), 2) Vibrotactile therapy applications for eating disorders, and 3) Music production techniques and sound authenticity. His work increasingly integrates clinical applications with musicological inquiry, demonstrating interdisciplinary collaboration with psychologists and medical professionals.
Navarret actively participates in research administration as a member of multiple scientific committees, including editorial boards for conference proceedings on electronic lutherie and electric guitar history. He serves on the Master's application evaluation committee and coordinates innovative pedagogical projects like MUXIC (French-Mexican exchanges on music and new technologies). His research is supported by ANR grants including Tabasco (2022-2026) and Staccato (2019-2024).
Navarret is an active member of the Lutherie - Acoustique - Musique (LAM) research team at the Jean Le Rond d'Alembert Institute, where he contributes to interdisciplinary projects examining the intersection of instrument design, acoustics, and musical gesture. His work with the international chair 'Geste - Acoustique - Musique' (GeAcMus) demonstrates his commitment to cross-disciplinary research that bridges science and art.
