Benoit Challand is a full-time Professor of Sociology at The New School for Social Research, part of The New School university. He has previously taught at New York University, the University of Fribourg (Switzerland), and the Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence (Italy). His academic work focuses on political sociology, global critical theory, Arab politics, civil society, and settler colonial formations.
- PhD in Social and Political Science from the European University Institute
- MA in Near East Studies from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, London)
- MA in Contemporary History and Greek Philology from the University of Fribourg
His research explores complex intersections between political sociology and contemporary Middle Eastern studies, particularly focusing on democratic participation, settler colonial dynamics, and the legacies of colonial violence in Tunisia and Yemen. His recent publications examine decentralization processes in Yemen and racialization patterns in post-colonial contexts.
Benoit has received multiple grants from the Mellon Foundation for interdisciplinary courses on settler colonialism in the USA, including the Periclean Faculty Leadership Program and Civic Liberal Arts Initiative. He has also held a Marie Curie Fellowship and is affiliated with several academic organizations including the Middle Eastern Studies Association (MESA), American Sociological Association, and the Center on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding at Geneva's Graduate Institute.
