Erich Steinman is a Professor of Sociology at Pitzer College since 2007. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Washington and a BA in Government and International Affairs from Augustana College.

His research spans political sociology, social movements, institutional theory, and the intersection of law with indigenous rights, race, and gender. He focuses on tribal sovereignty, federalism, and the cultural invisibility of marginalized identities.
His publications explore settler colonialism, tribal-academic collaboration, and the institutional legitimacy of American Indian sovereignty. Recent conference presentations address challenges in tribal partnerships, sovereignty myths, and community-building strategies.
