Dr. Bennett Gayle is an Associate Professor in the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity (CEHC) at the University at Albany, State University of New York. She serves as the director of the Social Vulnerability Laboratory at CEHC. Her roles include research, teaching, and leadership in emergency management and technology integration.
Dr. Bennett Gayle holds a unique academic background with degrees from prestigious institutions. Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Fire and Emergency Management from Oklahoma State University
- M.S. in Public Policy from the Georgia Institute of Technology
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology
Her research focuses on emergency management and the application of technology to assist vulnerable populations during disasters. Key areas of interest include marginalized populations in disasters, emergency communications, disaster policy, mobile wireless communications, and the integration of advanced technologies in emergency management practices.
She has secured research grants and contracts from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security. Since 2017, she has administered the annual state of the community survey of emergency management academic programs for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Her work bridges academic research with practical policy and technology applications.
In addition to her academic contributions, Dr. Bennett Gayle serves on the Advisory Board of the Institute for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Management (I-DIEM). She collaborates on FCC regulatory filings, some of which have been cited in rulemakings, indicating her influence in policy development.
She directs the Social Vulnerability Laboratory at CEHC, which focuses on understanding and mitigating risks for vulnerable populations during disasters through technological and policy interventions.
