Benjamin Tolchin, MD, MS, FAAN, FAES is an Associate Professor of Neurology at Yale School of Medicine and serves as Director of the Center for Clinical Ethics at Yale New Haven Health. His academic appointments include positions in the Department of Neurology, Center for Neuroepidemiology and Clinical Neurological Research, Epilepsy & Seizures Program, and Yale Program for Biomedical Ethics.
Dr. Tolchin completed his medical education at Harvard Medical School (2010), neurology residency at Columbia University Medical Center (2014), and fellowships in medical ethics, clinical neurophysiology, and epilepsy at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School (2015-2017). His academic background also includes an MS in Education from Pace University (2003) and AB in Philosophy from Harvard College (2001).
His research focuses on two primary areas: the impact of crisis standards of care and triage protocols on racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health disparities; and functional neurological disorders and epilepsy. He investigates novel interventions including motivational interviewing, smartphone apps, and other behavioral and technological approaches to improve treatment adherence and outcomes for patients with neurological conditions. His work bridges neurology, ethics, and health disparities research, addressing critical gaps in understanding how to provide equitable care during crises and for complex neurological conditions.
Dr. Tolchin's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on improving diagnostic approaches, treatment strategies, and ethical frameworks for neurological care. His recent work examines crisis standards of care during pandemics, functional neurological disorders, epilepsy management, and ethical considerations in neurology practice. His research spans clinical trials, systematic reviews, position statements, and innovative approaches to patient care.

He previously served on the American Epilepsy Society Psychosocial Comorbidities Committee (2016-2021). His leadership extends to developing clinical guidelines, ethics frameworks, and educational initiatives that shape neurological practice and policy.
