Dr Benjamin Steventon is a Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with Cambridge Reproduction. He leads The Regulative Embryo Lab, focusing on embryonic development mechanisms.
His research centers on pattern formation during gastrulation, challenging traditional positional information models. Key concepts include downward causation (multi-tissue interactions regulating gene networks) and pattern emergence (extracellular signals controlling autonomous gene network dynamics). Current work investigates how nutrient availability integrates with developmental signaling.
His recent publication analyzes developmental timing in chick embryos, revealing a novel cell dispersion phase uncoupled from Hox expression and dependent on tissue size.
Research utilizes heterochronic grafting, transgenic models, and single-cell transcriptomics to study progenitor cell dynamics during body axis formation.
