Benjamin Sheppard is an Associate Lecturer in the Bachelor of Fine Art - Drawing at RMIT University’s School of Art. His practice spans multi-disciplinary art and education, focusing on expanded drawing techniques and socio-political themes. He co-founded Ways and Means, an experimental collaborative project, and initiated The Bureau for the Organisation of Origins (BOO), exploring identity and curatorial discourse. Active since 2005, he has held roles at RMIT, Melbourne Polytechnic, and the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). His work engages with themes like environmental concerns, phenomenology, and institutional critique through exhibitions, residencies, and community projects.
Research & Exhibitions: Key projects include Feeling Drawing Thinking (2024), Scribbled Geometries (2023), and collaborations with The BOO. His research explores drawing’s role in representing identity and societal issues. He has exhibited widely, including at the Biennale of Australian Art (Ballarat) and RMIT Gallery, and participated in residencies in Australia, Italy, and France.
Awards & Recognition: Notable achievements include the Casama Group Award (2006), finalist status in the Waterhouse Prize (2016), and multiple residencies supported by institutions like the City of Melbourne. His work is featured in collections such as DRAWInternational (France) and the Casama Group (Australia).
Teaching & Mentorship: Coordinates the Capstone semester in BFA Drawing and supervises MFA students. Previously lectured in Expanded Studio Practice at RMIT and Sculpture/Theory at the VCA. Engaged in community arts initiatives, including RMIT’s Reconciliation Action Group and programming roles at Westspace ARI.
