Benjamin Powell

Benjamin Powell serves as Professor of Piano and Staff Pianist at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), where he has maintained a dual performance-teaching role since 2007. Holding qualifications including BMus, MMus, PRNCM, and MPhil, he represents a significant figure in British contemporary piano performance and pedagogy.

His educational background includes foundational studies at the Royal Northern College of Music with Carole Presland, followed by advanced training with Pierre-Laurent Aimard at the Hochschule für Musik Cologne and Alexander Melnikov at RNCM, supported by prestigious scholarships from the MBF, DAAD, and Lynn Foundation. He further refined his artistry at the International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove under Thomas Adès.

Professor Powell has developed a distinguished performance career specializing in contemporary repertoire alongside traditional classical works. His research interests encompass modern compositional techniques, collaborative piano practices, historical performance approaches to keyboard literature, and the pedagogy of advanced piano technique. His intelligent and expressive interpretations have established him as a leading interpreter of new music.

As an educator, Powell has cultivated numerous successful students who have won major competitions including BBC Young Musician of the Year, James Mottram International Competition, Manchester International Piano Concerto Competition, and the British Contemporary Piano Competition. Professor Powell maintains an active performance schedule while fulfilling his teaching responsibilities at RNCM, frequently collaborating with distinguished musicians such as Stefano Canuti, Leland Chen, Levon Chilingirian, and Craig Ogden.

Born in West Sussex, Professor Powell currently resides in Glossop with his wife and three children, maintaining an active presence in Manchester's vibrant musical community while serving as pianist for Psappha, Manchester's leading contemporary music ensemble since 2014.
