Benjamin Pitt is an Assistant Professor joining the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Fall 2025. His research investigates how cultural, linguistic, and physical contexts shape human conceptual representations, with a focus on space, time, and number.
His research interests lie at the intersection of cognition, cognitive neuroscience, and developmental psychology. He employs cross-cultural methods with indigenous Amazonian populations, developmental approaches with children, and experimental techniques with adults to understand the origins and variability of human concepts. His work emphasizes how structured experience gives rise to diverse yet lawful patterns of cognition across individuals and cultures.
Dr. Pitt is currently recruiting graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and a lab manager to join his research team starting in Fall 2025. He will be based in Tobin Hall 428 at UMass Amherst.
