Benjamin Ortiz is a Professor of Biological Sciences and the Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Hunter College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. He is affiliated with the School of Arts and Sciences at Hunter College.
His educational background includes:
- B.A. from Hunter College (1990)
- Ph.D. from Stanford University (1996)
- Postdoctoral training at the University of California, Berkeley (1996-2000)
Dr. Ortiz's research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of T cell development, particularly gene regulation during this process. His laboratory investigates the gene regulatory mechanisms that execute the T cell genetic program, with a specific focus on the regulation of the T cell receptor alpha chain (TCRa) locus and its locus control region (LCR). His work combines in vivo transgenic mouse models with in vitro T cell development systems using embryonic stem cells. A key aspect of his research examines how the TCRa LCR provides predictable gene expression patterns and insulation from genomic position effects. His research has significant implications for understanding basic immunological processes and for developing gene therapy applications targeting cancer and viral diseases like HIV.
Dr. Ortiz's laboratory has developed important reagents and technologies that have enabled collaborations with other research groups investigating T cell development and function. His work bridges fundamental molecular immunology with potential translational applications in cancer immunotherapy and treatment of viral diseases affecting T cells.
His scientific contributions have been recognized through numerous publications in prestigious journals including PLoS ONE, Journal of Immunology, Journal of Immunological Methods, and Journal of Biological Chemistry.
Dr. Ortiz maintains an active research laboratory, the Ortiz Lab, which continues to investigate the molecular mechanisms of T cell development and gene regulation.
