Dr. Benjamin Nicoll is a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at the School of Communication, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and a Chief Investigator in the Digital Media Research Centre. He also serves as the Study Area Coordinator for the Entertainment Industries major in the Bachelor of Communication program.
Dr. Nicoll holds a Doctor of Philosophy - Arts from the University of Melbourne. His academic journey has positioned him at the forefront of critical media studies, particularly focusing on the theoretical dimensions of digital media and gaming cultures.
Dr. Nicoll's research centers on the critical theory of media and technologies, with a specialized focus on videogames. His theoretical approach draws from psychoanalytic theory, cultural studies, critical social theory, and queer theory. He is particularly interested in developing a psychoanalytic theory of jouissance (enjoyment) in videogame play, examining how players experience pleasure and satisfaction through gaming interactions. His work often explores the intersections between gaming culture, identity formation, and social structures, with particular attention to how games articulate experiences of belonging and non-belonging.
His scholarly contributions include the monograph Minor Platforms in Videogame History (Amsterdam University Press, 2019) and the co-authored work with Brendan Keogh, The Unity Game Engine and the Circuits of Cultural Software (Palgrave, 2019). His recent publications demonstrate a consistent trajectory toward understanding the psychological dimensions of gaming enjoyment, with articles in Angelaki, Games and Culture, and Distinktion exploring topics ranging from ecological consciousness in games to the enjoyment of nonbelonging.
Dr. Nicoll is currently a Chief Investigator on the ARC Discovery project, 'Artistic Practice in Australian Videogame Development,' which examines the creative processes within Australia's game development industry. His work on game engines, platform histories, and crossmedia play demonstrates his comprehensive approach to understanding gaming cultures from multiple theoretical perspectives.
